The power of writing: How biographical coaching can help you make peace and find and strengthen your own identity

from Jessyca Haas

Biographical work, biographical coaching, biographical analysis, autobiographical awareness work - there are many names for it. But what is it actually about? Biographical coaching is about using your own life story to open up new perspectives, find your own identity and be at peace with yourself.

This form of self-reflection helped me a lot when I started my coaching training in a mindfulness-based monastery. It was there that I got to know and appreciate this method.

Definition of biographical coaching

Biographical coaching involves people working on the basis of their individual life story. This includes their experiences, visions, dreams and adventures. The aim is to find one's own identity and to accept oneself and make peace with everything that one's own history entails. The aim is to connect the past, present and future in a meaningful way and to grow and learn from one's own biography. From the author's point of view, it is often not clarity about the future that is needed first, but clarity about one's own past. Various tried and tested, experience-oriented exercises and techniques for self-reflection are used.

The importance of biographical coaching

Biographical coaching offers people numerous advantages. They can draw new energy from their own life path and life issues and develop visions or realize life plans that have not yet been lived. They can also recognize potentially inhibiting beliefs and attitudes from past experiences and establish and classify the connection between past actions or ways of thinking and current events. It is also easier for them to accept their own (family) history, to better integrate their own roles and to assess them in everyday life, both privately and professionally. This enables people to identify their own drivers, inner conflicts and personality traits and gain clarity for important decisions.

In principle, biographical coaching is suitable for anyone who wants to take a closer look at their own history. However, there is usually a personal reason for this, such as important questions about your origins or conflicts with your parents' or grandparents' generation. Inner blockages, traumas or unprocessed experiences also often play a role. People who are at a crossroads in their lives or careers or who want or need to reorient themselves can benefit from biographical coaching. It is also a good way to come to terms with separation or loss or to prepare for a major career move by examining your own resources. Biographical coaching offers a wide range of tools that are also suitable for people with little time.

Why biographical coaching?

Benefits of biographical coaching

Biographical coaching can have numerous benefits for you. I have spoken to some of my clients about this and summarized the most important ones for you:

1. draw new energy from your own life path and life themes

Biographical coaching enables you to come to terms with your own life path and your life issues so that you are no longer unconsciously dominated by the past. By reflecting on your experiences and events, you can recognize patterns, draw new energy and move into the future with renewed strength.

2. develop visions or realize life plans that have not (yet) been realized

Examining your own biography can help you to concretize your visions and goals. It can also help you discover and realize life plans that have not yet been realized. In English, there is the beautiful translation "Writing is like treasure hunting".

3. recognize inhibiting beliefs and attitudes from previous experiences

Past experiences and events often have a formative effect on your own thoughts and actions in adulthood. Biographical coaching enables you to become aware of these inhibiting beliefs and attitudes and to dissolve them.

4. establish a connection between previous actions/ways of thinking and current events

By examining your own biography, you can make connections between past actions and ways of thinking and current events. This can help you to better understand yourself and your behavior and to change it if necessary.

5. accept your own (family) history

Biographical coaching can help you to accept your own (family) history and let go of it. You can forgive and move into the future free(er) from old hurts and burdens.

In my coaching sessions, I also give rituals on how we can forgive more easily.

6. better integrate your own roles and use them in everyday life

Biographical coaching allows you to better understand your different roles in life and at work and learn how to successfully integrate and implement them in your everyday life. But the best thing is when you no longer have to take on different roles, but are always and everywhere yourself.

7. identify your own drivers, inner conflicts and personality traits

Biographical coaching can help you to identify your inner drivers, conflicts and personality traits. This allows you to get to know yourself better and work on yourself in a targeted manner. This creates calm and serenity.

I offer great tests, templates and established methods!

8. gain clarity for important decisions

By reflecting on your own biography, you can gain clarity for important decisions and make targeted plans for the future. This reconnects you with your own intuition.

I have written further blog articles on both topics:

Target groups of biographical coaching:

Who is the method for?

1. people who want to come to terms with their own history:

These can be people who are curious to find out more about their own past and that of their family. People who want to become aware of their own identity or better understand their own roots can also benefit from biographical coaching.

2. people with personal reasons, e.g. important questions about their origin:

Some people are preoccupied with certain questions about their own origins or family history. The first 7 years in particular are the most influential. This is where biographical coaching can help to create clarity and find answers to unanswered questions.

3. people at a crossroads in life or work:

People who are facing important decisions in their life or career can benefit from biographical coaching. Dealing with your own biography can help you gain clarity about your own values and goals, making it easier to make decisions.

4. people who need/want to reorient themselves:

Anyone who wants or needs to reorient themselves professionally or privately can use their own history as a resource through biographical coaching. By dealing with past experiences, it can be easier to recognize new perspectives and opportunities. Above all, it becomes clearer when a person has already stood in their own power and how it felt. Memories can be awakened here.

5. people who have to come to terms with a separation or loss:

A separation or loss can trigger a crisis and fundamentally change your life. Biographical coaching can help you to use your own biography as a resource and to find new paths and perspectives by dealing with past experiences.

6. people who want to prepare for a major career move:

Anyone preparing for a major career move can use biographical coaching to identify their own strengths and resources and make targeted use of them. Examining your own values and goals can also be helpful when preparing for a career change.

Tools and methods in biographical coaching

Biographical coaching uses various methods and tools to support the process of coming to terms with one's own biography. These include, for example, biographical interviews, working with photos, biographies or family trees as well as methods from systemic coaching and psychology. The use of creativity techniques or exercises for self-reflection can also be part of biographical coaching. Writing also plays an important role here.

It is always important to me that the methods are tailored to individual needs. I have developed the concept "Write Yourself Free" developed. A script that provides you with structured and sustainable support in biographical coaching. You can decide the pace and depth yourself.

Biographical coaching in practice

Biographical work and biographical analysis

Biographical work and analysis is a central component of biographical coaching. This involves looking at and reflecting on various stages in a person's life in a structured process. This makes it possible to better understand one's own life story and to draw conclusions for the future. The connection between body and mind and the different phases of development also become clearer for the individual.

An important step in biography work is the creation of a precise timeline, which lists the most important events in a person's life in chronological order. As part of the biographical analysis, certain topics (such as money, sexuality, nutrition, friendship, etc.) and patterns in one's own life story are then worked out, which are examined in more detail during the coaching process.

Experience-oriented exercises and techniques for self-reflection

Biographical coaching also uses various exercises and techniques for self-reflection. The aim of these methods is to support you in expanding your own perception and perspective. This can include, for example, imaginary meditative journeys into your own past or working with inner images and symbols.

Creative techniques such as writing diaries or creating collages can also be used as part of biographical coaching. These methods allow you to better express and reflect on your own feelings and thoughts.

Exemplary use cases of biographical coaching

Biographical coaching can be helpful in many different situations and phases of life. Here are a few examples:

Conclusion

Summary of the results

Biographical coaching focuses on a person's biography in order to promote their personal and professional development. Various tools and methods such as biography work and analysis, meditation, breathing exercises, experiential exercises and self-reflection techniques can be used. The target groups for biographical coaching are wide-ranging and include people who want to come to terms with their own history, are at a crossroads in their life or career, need or want to reorient themselves, need to process a separation or loss or want to prepare for a major career move. The benefits of biographical coaching are manifold, such as the development of visions, the identification of inhibiting beliefs and attitudes, the clarification of important decisions and the integration of one's own roles in everyday life.

Outlook on future developments in biographical coaching

Biographical coaching can be seen as a promising method that will continue to grow in importance in the future. Especially in the age of digitalization and the accelerated world of work, biographical coaching can help to offer people an opportunity to reflect on themselves with pen and paper and develop their own goals and visions (without comparing themselves).

Conclusion and my personal opinion

Biographical coaching is a valuable addition to other coaching methods, as it helps people to consciously perceive and reflect on their own history and associated experiences. This creates genuine self-awareness. This structure can give rise to new perspectives and solutions that can contribute to positive personal and professional development.

If you too would like to consciously perceive and reflect on your history and experiences in order to develop new perspectives and solutions, create inner peace and genuine self-confidence, then Biographical Coaching could be the right thing for you.
